Born on New Years Eve in 1975. I’m small both in girth and height. I thrive on movement, and the act of noting this movement in life via a writing instrument or a camera. I usually have both near me at all times.

I’m strongly considering starting a Bay Area Lunar Society if none exists.

Think about it: Get togethers beginning at the stroke of midnight and continuing until we are ejected from the premises in the wee small hours near daybreak, communing with some of the more unsavory spirits who have ever drifted out of a whiskey glass or a ouija board.

Ok, ok, us kids in the East Bay (you know who you are) are already knee-deep in such practices, but still. It’s a thought.

"Even if our efforts of attention seem for years to be producing no result, one day a light that is..."

“Even if our efforts of attention seem for years to be producing no result, one day a light that is in exact proportion to them will flood the soul.”

- Simone Weil

Wedded Bliss. From the archives.

STREETS OF CALCUTTA:

In a number of cities around the world there is a growing problem of children living rough without sufficient food and shelter, in addition to virtually no caring as often they are separated from family. In Kolkata (Calcutta) India the problem is a massive one.

Anybody can be a photographer. Anybody can put ‘photography’ at the end of their blog name, or Flickr name, or Twitter name.

Does it make you a photographer? Sure. Does it make you good? Not so much. But hell, maybe calling yourself something you want to be good at, maybe that helps, who am I to say otherwise? Me, the guy who, just yesterday, wrote about writing things down to make them real.

Let’s just say it takes more than just calling yourself a photographer to make you good.”

That passage really stuck with me. You really must work at your craft and have the passion for it to truly understand what it means to be a photographer.

Just this past Friday I attended a life drawing session at SFAI. For the past few years, I’ve abandoned my formal drawing skills in favor of quick sketches and, obviously, photography. Drawing forces you to take time in creating your image (whereas in photography, you have the option of creating your image quickly by pressing down on the shutter), and as a result, it’s imperative to truly see - to take in the details, like the way the light hits the skin of the person you’re drawing at a particular part of his/her body that gives shadow, definition, and depth.

This re-immersion into creativity has resulted in a few things in the works. In the next few weeks, keep an eye out for the following:

The launch of www.yvefontilea.com (formal portfolio site)

The launch of a joint photography venture with a fellow San Francisco photographer

Cigar Bar in San Francisco will be exhibiting the work of Blow Up! (a San Francisco Bay Area photographers collective), which I’m honored to be a part of. The opening reception is on Tuesday, April 6th, at 7p.

The next two months will be fairly busy, needless to say. Hopefully I’ll be able to take a moment here and there to simply breathe?

The bride and her entourage.
